A study in the USA has shown that more than 50 million hours of school are missed each year because of dental problems (Gift et al., American Journal of Public Health 1992; 82: 1663–1668). However, nearly all oral health problems are generally preventable. Establishing the right habit of brushing day and night (as soon as possible) will give children the best chance of having healthy teeth and gums.
While the responsibility lies in the hands of the family, it still doesn’t happen everywhere, and many children go to school in the morning and to bed in the evening without brushing.
Teachers have a crucial role
Research has shown that a programme of education and supervised brushing in school can be effective in reducing cavities for the long term. With simple and playful materials, teachers can educate their students about why brushing is so important.
As part of a general health and hygiene session, schools can help by teaching kids what teeth are: what they are for and why they need to be protected by brushing day and night with fluoride toothpaste.
